Regulations of the International Chess Tournament
Norway Chess
Stavanger, Norway, May 28 – June 11, 2023
FIDE’s Laws of Chess will apply.
Format
10 players will take part in the Tournament. The Tournament is a round-robin event.
The Tournament consists of 9 rounds. Berger tables will beused for the pairings.
Drawing of lots will be done at the Technical Meeting.
Time Control
The time control is 3 minutes + 2 seconds increment for each move.
Default time is 3 minutes.
Tie-Breaks
Tie-breaks for Blitz tournament:
Format
10 players will take part in the Tournament.
The Tournament is a round-robin event with Armageddon.
The Tournament consists of 9 rounds. Berger tables will be used for the pairings.
Default time is 15 minutes.
Players will take it in turns to choose their pairing number for the Classical tournament, starting with the Blitz tournament winner and proceeding in the order in which they finished in the Blitz tournament.
Time Control
Each player will have 120 minutes on the clock with an increment of 10 seconds after move 40.
The time control for the Armageddon game: white has 10 minutes and black has 7 minutes with an increment for both players of 1 second per move, starting from move 41.
Draw by Mutual Agreement
Players are not allowed to agree to a draw until at least 30 moves have been made by each player. This rule does not apply to Blitz and Armageddon games.
If the classical game is drawn, an Armageddon game will be played. It shall start within 20 minutes of the conclusion of the classical game. The player with White pieces will continue with White in Armageddon. If the Armageddon game is drawn, black will win.
Points
Players will get the following points per round:
Win in the classical game: 3 points
Loss in theclassical game: 0 points
Draw in the classical game & win Armageddon: 1½ points
Draw in the main game & loss Armageddon: 1 point
Tie-breaks
If two players share the first place, there will be a Play-Off to decide the winner. This Play-off consists of a two-game blitz match with the time control of 3 min. + 2 sec. increment per move. If this match ends in a tie, a further match will be played. If this match ends in a tie, there will be an Armageddon game where white has 10 minutes and black, with draw odds, has 7 minutes both with an increment of 1 second per move, starting from move 41.
If more than two players share first place, there will be a double round-robin with the below tiebreak rules.
The remaining players in this will also share the prize money according to the below tie-break systems:
The total prize fund of the Tournament is 2 500 000 NOK. Distribution of Prize money occurs as followed:

#3 NOK 250 000
#4 NOK 200 000
#5 NOK 180 000
#6 NOK 170 000
#7 NOK 160 000
#8 NOK 140 000
#9 NOK 130 000
#10 NOK 120 000
Prize money will be shared among the players with the same score. This does not apply to the first prize.
