During this year’s Altibox Norway Chess a new concept was launched, which caused our official broadcast TV2 to double its viewers.

In the new concept we introduced significantly shorter time to think with no additional time after the moves are made. The clock is an essential part of the game from the first move, and if the game ends in a draw, players must meet in an Armageddon. This way a winner is always announced. During Armageddon, the one who plays white gets more thinking time than black, but at the same time, if Armageddon ends in a draw the victory goes to the one who plays black. For those who win the traditional game gets 2 points, while a win in Armageddon gives a total of 1.5 points. The loser of Armageddon gets ½ point.

The feedback has been very positive both from the players but also from chess experts. FIDE’s President, Arkady Dvorkovich even stated they are paying close attention to the new way of playing chess.

The winner of this years Altibox Norway Chess is Magnus Carlsen
