After stepping back from chess to focus on academics, Wei Yi’s return to the world’s top 10 is a testament to his resilience and talent. Currently holding a live rating of 2753 (November 2024), he remains China’s No. 1 and one of the most formidable players in the game.
A trailblazer in chess, Wei Yi holds the record as the youngest player to surpass a 2700 rating. His career is marked by notable achievements, including being a three-time Chinese Chess Champion and the 2018 Asian Chess Champion. Most recently, Wei Yi demonstrated his sharp form by winning the 2024 Tata Steel Masters, reaffirming his position among the world’s elite.
Wei Yi expressed enthusiasm for his debut at Norway Chess 2025, particularly about the chance to face Magnus Carlsen in classical chess after a long hiatus. “Of course, the most exciting thing for me is that I will have the opportunity to face Magnus in classical games,” Wei Yi said. “Our last classical game was in the distant year of 2018. It’s quite a long time…”
Known for his fighting spirit, Wei Yi embraces risk and thrives in complex positions. He explained, “I always like to seek chances for battles in my games, even though sometimes the results were not good for me.”

Preparing for Norway Chess 2025, Wei is focused on both physical and mental readiness. “Doing more exercise, training more ‘Armageddon’ playoffs, and being mentally prepared to compete against top chess players. I need to overcome my nervousness…” he said.
