PRESS RELEASE
MARCH 27 2020

The Altibox Norway Chess 2020 tournament was supposed to take place from June 1-13 is now postponed to October 3-17. The tournament will be played at Clarion Hotel Energy in Stavanger.

Altibox Norway Chess is an international event with players and crew arriving from more than 10 different countries. The period of uncertainty we all are in now creates difficulty in the planning for us as organizers. Furthermore, it is highly uncertain what the status of the pandemic will be in June and what the consequences it will have for the tournament.

With this we have considered various alternatives and are now very pleased to have found at a new time for the tournament after clearing the dates with FIDE (World Chess Federation), players, hotel/venue location, broadcasters and our largest partners.

Our side events such as the open tournament, the school chess tournament and other functions will also be rescheduled to the same period in October. More information will be given on these events. Changes may of course occur in relation to the evolution of the pandemic.

The safety of our players and other team members is of course what matters the most to us. We hope that the postponement will spread some joy to all the chess fans around the world that have been looking forward to Altibox Norway Chess 2020.

We thank our players, partners and others for their willingness to change plans and collaborate to make the event happen. We encourage you all to continue your great work in preventing the spread of the covid-19 virus together.
