Since the tournament’s inception in 2013, Carlsen has competed in every single edition, making him the only player to have participated in all Norway Chess tournaments to date. Over the years, he has built an exceptional record in the event, claiming seven Norway Chess titles and delivering countless memorable moments for fans around the world.

Carlsen has held the World No. 1 ranking continuously since July 2011. He is a five-time World Champion in classical chess, the reigning six-time World Rapid Champion, and the reigning nine-time World Blitz Champion — a total of 20 World Championship titles across formats.

His return adds early star power to the 2026 edition and sets the stage for another world-class lineup, with additional player announcements to follow in the coming weeks.

Norway Chess 2026 will take place from 25 May to 5 June 2026 at Deichman Bjørvika in Oslo, marking the start of a new era for the tournament in the Norwegian capital.
