World No. 2 Fabiano Caruana is set to compete in Norway Chess 2025, marking his eighth appearance at the event. With a current rating of 2803, Caruana is a powerhouse in the chess world and a four-time U.S. Chess Champion, solidifying his reputation as one of the greatest players of his generation.
Caruana’s career highlights include a peak rating of 2844—the third-highest in history—and winning the 2018 Candidates Tournament, making him the first American World Championship challenger since Bobby Fischer. That same year, he faced Magnus Carlsen for the World Title but ultimately lost in the tiebreak playoffs. Caruana is also a former Norway Chess Champion and secured his spot in the next Candidates Tournament by topping the FIDE Circuit leaderboard in 2024.
His tournament wins span across major events like the 2014 Sinquefield Cup (where he achieved a record 3098 performance rating), 2020 Tata Steel Masters, 2023 Sinquefield Cup, and the 2024 Superbet Chess Classic, among others.
Nicknamed “The Machine,” Caruana is celebrated for his precise calculations and deep opening preparation. Magnus Carlsen has called him “undogmatic” but noted he sometimes struggles in simpler positions, a rare flaw in an otherwise clinical approach to the game.
As Norway Chess 2025 gathers the world’s best players, the spotlight will be on Caruana. Can he add a second Norway Chess title to his impressive resume?
“We are thrilled to have Fabiano Caruana return to Norway Chess,” said Kjell Madland, our Founder and Tournament Director. “Fabiano is one of the most consistent players in the world, and his participation adds great value to the tournament. We look forward to seeing him compete again in Stavanger, Norway.”
