Sara Khadem Joins Norway Chess Women 2025

The Women’s World No. 21, Sarasadat Khademalsharieh, better known as Sara Khadem, will debut at Norway Chess Women 2025. Her journey in chess has been defined by perseverance, adaptability, and a knack for overcoming challenges both on and off the board.

A Strong Chess Career

Born in Iran and now representing Spain, Sara has built an impressive career in the chess world. She holds the International Master title and has collected numerous achievements along the way.

In 2023, Sara won the Spanish Women’s Championship. Among her career highlights are finishing as runner-up in the Women’s World Rapid and Blitz Championships in 2018, and placing second in the 2015–16 FIDE Women’s Grand Prix. She also claimed the title of Iranian Women’s Champion in 2015.

Sara’s talent shone early in her career. As a youth player, she won the World Girls Under-12 Championship in 2009, the Asian Under-12 Girls’ Championship in 2008, the Asian Under-16 Girls Blitz Championship in 2012, and the World Under-16 Girls Blitz Championship in 2013 In 2014, she placed second in the World Junior Girls Championship.

A Dynamic Playing Style

Sara describes her playing style as “universal,” emphasizing her ability to adapt to the demands of any position. Her flexibility and tactical awareness make her a dynamic presence at the chessboard.

Courage in the Face of Adversity

In December 2022, Sara made headlines when she chose not to wear a hijab during the FIDE World Rapid and Blitz Chess Championships. This decision came amid widespread protests in Iran against government mandates, sparking international attention.

After the event, Sara moved to Spain with her family. However, her decision led to serious consequences, including an arrest warrant issued by Iranian authorities in January 2023. Despite these challenges, Sara officially transferred her chess federation from Iran to Spain in July 2023 and became a Spanish citizen.
