On Wednesday, May 28, Bjergstedparken in Stavanger will once again be buzzing with energy as Norway Chess, together with our Spanish sponsor Fundación RMD, hosts this year’s school chess tournament – an exciting outdoor event for children across the Stavanger region.

The tournament brings together teams from across the Stavanger region to play chess on oversized boards with eco-friendly pieces made from recycled rubber. But the event is about much more than just the competition – it’s a about learning, teamwork, and the pure joy of playing the game.
Who can join?
The tournament is open to both primary and lower secondary school students in Rogaland. Each team has four players (plus up to two substitutes). We’re accepting 20 primary school teams and 12 lower secondary school teams – and spots tend to fill up quickly!
When and where:
Wednesday, May 28, 9:15am to 2:30pm
Outside the old concert hall in Bjergstedparken, Stavanger
What to expect:
Teams will play five rounds of rapid chess, followed by finals and placement matches. Games are timed, and team members take turns making moves – ensuring everyone stays involved and gets a chance to play.
Exciting prizes:
The winning primary school team will earn a trip to León, Spain in November to take part in a similar tournament.
The winning lower secondary school team gets a chance to play simultaneous chess against a top player from Norway Chess on Saturday, June 7.
What to bring:
A packed lunch, good energy, and an adult team leader. We’ll take care of the rest!
A sustainable initivate:
The school chess tournament is part of Norway Chess’s broader commitment to sustainability and education. It’s an inclusive event where children and young people experience learning, teamwork, and joy – all through the game of chess.
How to sign up:
To register your team, send an email to Ivbjørn Nimki at [email protected] with your school’s name and number of participants. The deadline to register is April 30.
We can’t wait to welcome children back to Bjergstedparken for a day of chess, sunshine (fingers crossed), and great memories!
