The man behind the Von Doren brand; former filmmaker Øyvind Von Doren Asbjørnsen, is passionate about chess. Among other things, he has directed the film “The Prince of Chess” (2005), and was co-producer on “MAGNUS” (2016). In 2016 he followed his childhood dream of starting his own watch brand – however, chess continued to have a prominent role also in this venture. Von Doren’s first collection of mechanical wristwatches was named Grandmaster, inspired by the strength and effort required of a chess player to achieve the title of Grandmaster.
Von Doren’s latest model is a high end chronograph inspired by the race car Il Tempo Gigante from the Norwegian stop-motion animated film “Flåklypa Grand Prix” (“The Pinchcliffe Grand Prix” in English). Part “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” part “Speed Racer,” and part proto-“Wallace and Gromit,”. Case in brushed and polished stainless steel, radar hands, diopter sight on the chrono second hand, and Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW9 that glows even in the darkest night.
The movement is a La Joux-Perret Top Grade Caliber L112 with a 60-hour power reserve. Subdials for measuring seconds, minutes, and hours. Only 150 watches with a black dial and 150 with a brown dial are produced. Read more about the watch here.
First-class craftsmanship combined with a solid foundation in chess makes Von Doren the natural choice as Official Timekeeper for the sixth time.
